Since there is an addition sign before the parenthesis, we do not distribute. We can just combine all like terms.

2.212341345x+(2.23125x-54.123452) = 1
2.212341345x+2.23125x - 54.123452 = 1
4.443591345x - 54.123452 = 1
+54.123452 +54.123452
4.443591345x = 55.123452
/4.443591345 /4.443591345
x = 12.40515783748337

Lots of decimals but not too hard.

First of all I am NOT Emmett!
Also, can a standard form graph be increasing, or is it always decreasing?

Good question. I was wondering that too.

I think it can be both, depending on what the values of the x and y-intercepts are.
That seems like a very interesting game! I might try that!

Good question Emmett, and great answer Cora. It does depend on the x and y intercepts.

I kind of understand. but not quite.
So I have a question.
Can we figure out the value of BOTH variables rather than having to substitute one of the variables for zero to find the other one?

Each line has an infinite amount of (x,y) pairs. If you know one of the variables you can always solve for the other. We just use 0 to help us graph because it is the easiest to solve and plot.
